At OVS we love a challenge! In fact, we specialise in overcoming design difficulties where others may have failed. Whether it’s unlocking potential in layouts, overcoming planning roadblocks, or finding light where there seems to be none. Here are some examples of the design challenges we have faced, and how we overcame them.
Challenge: Turning an Unconventional Idea into a Reality
We welcome your original design ideas and dream projects!
Take, The Garage as an example. This complex project involved turning the disorganised shell of a neglected basement repair garage into a space for family, entertaining, and displaying an extraordinary collection of classic cars. The result is an innovatively designed sleek minimalist space that meets the multilayered needs of this discerning client. Balancing aesthetics and practical function, The Garage is as warm and welcoming as it is sophisticated and cutting edge.
We achieved this by incorporating industrial materials and textures complimented by soft furnishings and considered lighting. Bespoke suspended light panels illuminate each car like a museum piece. We introduced a new exhaust extraction system and high levels of complex security. Changing tones within the finish of the flooring and varying ceiling heights assist in dividing the space into a bar, games zone and lounge.
Solution: Through thoughtful spatial planning and creativity in design we were able to balance form and function, resulting in a visually stunning space that meets each one of the client’s practical needs.
Challenge: Planning Permission
Obtaining planning permission can be a maze of regulations and setbacks, often leading to frustrations or halted projects.
In Urban Refuge, we stepped in to solve a series of planning difficulties, navigating the red tape and delivering a solution that married the client’s vision with planning requirements. We created a series of single-storey, two-storey and loft extensions along with a double-height atrium and reconfigured internal spaces. Transforming an end-of-terrace Victorian house into a unique light-filled family home and an urban sanctuary.
Considering an extension, but concerned about planning restrictions? When space is at a premium, we love to find creative design solutions to extend and enhance your property. For example, Fish Scale House involved providing the clients with much-needed space through Permitted Development and by building only what was necessary. The design scheme involved creating new connections through the house with small extensions on the ground floor. At the loft level, an L-shaped dormer provides a new bedroom, office and bathroom.
Solution: In-depth knowledge of planning regulations and a tailored approach to the site’s specific constraints.
Challenge: Lack of Light
Poorly lit spaces can feel cramped and oppressive yet bringing in natural light isn’t always straightforward—especially in urban settings or extensions.
In Poised Arch, we faced the challenge of working with a property located within the Chiswick Expansion, an area of closely positioned Victorian terrace houses. Expansion and spatial reconfiguration were key objectives of this project. We redesigned an existing rear extension using permitted development rules. Utilising clever engineering and juxtaposing brick and steel, the curved structure is characterised by a sense of weightlessness. This is complemented by expansive glazing. The result? An open, bright space flooded with natural light.
Solution: Smart integration of light-enhancing features. Light wells, skylights, and thoughtful window placement are just some of the tools in our arsenal.
Challenge: Maximising Development Potential
For developers, getting the most out of a site while maintaining design integrity is a priority. However, incorporating more units without diminishing the overall quality of a site is a complex challenge. Keep an eye on our website for updates on one of our prime London development projects, The Method, Notting Hill’s coolest contemporary wellness centre due to open in 2025. Designing at every stage, from the building’s layout through to the interior design scheme provides an opportunity to demonstrate how beautiful design can express the personality of a brand and increase the value of a property.
Solution: Creative layouts and smart space optimisation. It’s about seeing opportunities others miss, rethinking layouts, and using every inch of space strategically.
Whether it’s adding value to developments, unlocking natural light, or resolving planning roadblocks, we’ve built a reputation for tackling the toughest spatial problems and turning them into opportunities to create exceptional spaces.
