Rainscape

It’s not often that we are asked to design a project that celebrates the sound of rain, but this unique brief allowed us to blend an architectural proposal with the grandeur of an imperial Australian Victorian aesthetic. Drawing inspiration from the rich tradition of tropical architecture, the design focuses on the seamless relationship between materials and nature, where the environment becomes an integral part of the experience.

The roof, crafted with corrugated steel sheeting, serves both a functional and poetic purpose: it enhances the soothing sound of rain, amplifying the gentle pitter-patter that evokes a sense of calm and connection with nature. This design choice not only evokes the warmth and authenticity of Australian architecture but also ties the space back to its English setting, where the rhythm of rainfall is a constant companion.

A key feature of the design is a large, covered porch that provides an intimate space from which the rain can be fully appreciated. This sheltered area becomes a perfect retreat, inviting residents to pause and embrace the beauty of a rainy day. The blend of Victorian style with tropical elements creates a striking harmony between past and present, while the materials and layout foster a deep connection to the natural world, making it an evocative and immersive living space.
