Play House

The brief for this project involved the reconfiguration of the lower ground floor and basement of a terraced house in South London, with the aim of creating a versatile and functional family space. The new design needed to accommodate a second living area—one that could serve as both a TV and playroom for the children—while also integrating a small downstairs bathroom and a new utility room. The challenge was to turn the poorly planned Victorian spaces into an environment that was not only functional but also suited the needs of modern family life.

We approached the project with a strong focus on materiality, ceiling heights, and transparency, all of which played a crucial role in transforming these once cramped, dark areas into welcoming, open spaces. By carefully reworking the floorplan and strategically placing walls and openings, we introduced a sense of flow and connection between the different zones. The integration of large windows and clever use of light helped to elevate the space, while maintaining a sense of privacy where necessary.

The material palette was chosen to be both contemporary and practical, with natural textures and finishes that added warmth and character to the space. The result is a bright, airy, and functional lower ground floor that perfectly caters to the needs of the family, offering a seamless blend of modern living and historical charm. This transformation has not only improved the functionality of the space but has also enhanced the overall experience of the home.
