Loft within a Loft

The brief for this project was initially deemed impossible, given the constraints of the space. The top-floor loft flat in Crystal Palace had very limited head height due to its shared freehold status, and the goal was to reconfigure the flat to add a second bedroom—a challenge that seemed insurmountable at first. The awkward proportions of the loft, coupled with the need to preserve the integrity of the shared structure, meant that any traditional approach would have been inadequate.

However, through a combination of creative design and innovative thinking, we managed to turn these constraints into opportunities. By playing with varying ceiling heights, we were able to introduce a sense of verticality and space without compromising the functionality of the flat. Carefully designed stairs maximized the limited floor area, allowing for easy access to the new bedroom while maintaining a light and airy feel throughout.

The key to transforming this tight space was the strategic use of light. By introducing skylights and carefully placed windows, we created a sense of openness, allowing natural light to flood the room and enhance the feeling of space. The resulting bedroom is not only quiet and peaceful but also unexpectedly spacious, offering stunning views over South London. This project stands as a testament to how thoughtful design can overcome seemingly impossible challenges and turn a confined, awkward space into a beautifully functional room.
