Layers of Light

In considering the refurbishment of this beautiful house to convert it into flats, our proposal sought to balance the preservation of the building’s character with the need for functional modern spaces. To achieve this, we introduced an extension to the ground floor to provide additional volume and improve the overall flow of the building. The extension was designed as a subtle glass box placed at the end of the building, creating a delicate contrast between the existing structure and the new addition. This transparent extension allows natural light to flood into the interior while maintaining a respectful connection to the original architecture.

To ensure the central bedroom would receive sufficient natural light, we proposed the creation of an internal courtyard, a thoughtful solution that brings daylight into the heart of the building. The use of layers of glazing and horizontal panes within the extension creates a series of filtered views, adding a sense of depth and complexity to the space. The light is diffused as it passes through the varying layers, offering a soft, inviting atmosphere in the bedrooms beyond. This design concept reinterprets traditional architectural boundaries, seamlessly blending old and new while enhancing the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the flats, ensuring they offer both comfort and elegance.
