Kingfisher Row
Kingfisher Row is an exciting project consisting of six duplex homes located on a picturesque gully site in Hamilton, New Zealand. The challenge was to create a series of homes that offered both spaciousness and privacy, despite being built on a remarkably small footprint. The design revolves around an open, double-height living space that serves as the heart of each home. This expansive area is flanked by three comfortable double bedrooms, strategically placed above and below the living area to maximize space while ensuring a functional flow.
One of the key design solutions was the integration of the stairs as a sound buffer between the two sides of each duplex. By positioning the stairs in a way that isolates the living spaces from the adjacent home, the design enhances privacy and reduces noise transfer, effectively giving each home a sense of separation. This clever arrangement allows the duplexes to function almost as detached homes, offering residents the feeling of independence and comfort without sacrificing the benefits of a shared structure.
The use of high ceilings, large windows, and a thoughtful layout ensures that the homes feel open and airy, while making the most of their limited space. Kingfisher Row offers a unique blend of efficient design, privacy, and a connection to the surrounding natural beauty, providing a contemporary living solution that works harmoniously with its environment.
