Floating House

This project proposes the creation of a new house situated on a narrow, tapered plot of land to the side of our client's existing property in Dulwich. The design seeks to be both contextually respectful and visually striking, integrating seamlessly into the surrounding environment while offering a bold, contemporary statement. At its core, the new house is conceived as a decorative and well-proportioned brick-clad structure, utilizing cross-laminated timber (CLT) for its sustainable and efficient qualities. This material choice balances modernity with traditional brick, creating a visually appealing yet durable home.

The house is elevated, resting on slender supports that allow it to hover above a transparent glass box below. This creates a sense of suspension, where the typically heavy materials seem to defy gravity, offering an intriguing contrast between solidity and lightness. The transparency of the glass box beneath also offers a dynamic visual connection with the surrounding landscape.

The design also incorporates a basement with carefully considered light wells, allowing natural light to filter into the lower levels, which house additional family and sleeping spaces. These light wells create a sense of openness and airiness in what could otherwise be a confined subterranean space. The result is a family home that is at once innovative, respectful of its surroundings, and perfectly suited to the needs of our clients.
